I’ve unexpectedly encountered one possible bright spot in my life. I don’t know, but maybe God wants to give me something good in all of this turmoil. I’m so grateful for this, and I hope it turns out the way I want it to. I think sometimes God will give us something good that we know we don’t deserve, or could never obtain on our own, just to awaken our heart to his grace. And when God does this while we are undeserving, it just humbles us and makes us realize that we need to depend on Him, and that this dependence is good for us. The Bible says something interesting in Romans 2:4; it says, “the goodness of God leads you to repentance.” One translation uses the word “kindness” instead of goodness. We usually get it backwards. We tend to think it’s the hellfire and brimstone that will bring someone to repentance. But when we see our sin for what it is, and realize that God just wants to be kind to us, it makes us repent and be grateful for what he didn’t do that he could’ve done and had every right to do. God is still good even when everything seems to be going wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I read something yesterday that said we shouldn’t “presume on God’s kindness”. Sometimes people will say this sort of thing to rob you of any hope that you might have, but it’s true; we shouldn’t presume anything good when we’ve wronged God because He is righteous and just in His judgments. However, it’s really amazing when he chooses to be good to us anyway. There are verses in the Bible that say the opposite of what this writer seemed to be saying: that instead of expecting the worst, we should believe in and hope for God’s kindness. Take, for instance. Psalm 27:13, where it says: “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Here, David explicitly states that expecting and believing to see God’s goodness in this life is what keeps the heart from despairing during hard times. And Psalm 34:8 says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him.<\/em>” Maybe the key here is the trusting-God aspect. Furthermore, Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” It’s very clear here that Jesus loved us and died for us even though we are sinners and didn’t deserve it.
