Indeed there are some and you need to be on guard, but I think there are some people that have been unfairly targeted for things they’ve said, or they’ve been charged with guilt by association. I’ve said plenty of questionable things in my life, if you want to get picky, you could probably call me a heretic too. Sometimes people say things without realizing what they are saying. Sometimes people make mistakes. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are trying to lead others astray. For instance, there is one preacher who preached on “Slaying your giants”. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard similar things come out of the mouths of Christians. I don’t think this rises to the level of heresy. The charge is that it’s not us who slays the giants, but God. We are not the heroes of the bible. This may be true, but is it a fatal flaw? I could probably argue that we are indeed slaying giants because of the Holy Spirit within us who can slay giants. If you think there is something wrong with someone’s preaching, maybe you can talk to them about it and try to clear up any misunderstandings that they might have instead of being so quick to condemn. I don’t think we need to throw people away just because they had an interpretation error. God looks at our heart and our motives, not how well we can quote a systematic theology textbook verbatim. Having said all of that, I think sound doctrine is important. But again, if someone makes a doctrinal error, talk to them about it and try to show them the way forward instead of throwing them out completely. I’m not here to defend heretics, but we could use a little grace in our discussions. The bible says God’s kindness leads us to repentance, not instant condemnation. If you think someone needs to repent of their teachings, talk to them kindly about it. They may have open ears. Hasn’t God shown you immense kindness, even when you were wrong? The Pharisees even implied that Jesus was “deceiving the people” John 7:12. They even called him an “imposter” Mat 27:63. Are you doing the same thing to people who are trying their best to serve God?

Yes, the Pharisees accused Jesus not just of a simple misinterpretation, but of being a dangerous deceiver who was leading the people astray. When they couldn’t trap Him in a theological debate, they escalated their labels to the absolute extreme—charging Him with blasphemy and claiming His power came from the devil. They were so blinded by their own system that they threw away the Savior because He didn’t fit their textbook definitions.

“Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.” 1 Cor 4:4-5y

I don’t think anyone would accuse David Jeremiah or Tony Evans of heresy, yet they both talk about “Slaying Your Giants”.

Today there is lots of talk about heretics in the church.
