What can you do with a guy like Francis Chan? He is unencumbered from worldly desires. He doesn’t want your money because he’s not motivated by it. Offer him a job as a mega-church pastor, and he doesn’t want that either because he already walked away from pastoring a successful mega church that he founded in California. He didn’t like all the attention the mega-church brought him and thought maybe he should follow more after Christ and plant small house churches. At the height of his popularity he rejected the lifestyle and expectations that come along with being in the spotlight. Is something wrong with Francis Chan, or is there something wrong with the rest of us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I’m not sure there is anything wrong with being a mega-church pastor or having money per se–those things can come with their own unique temptations for sure but they seem to be essentially neutral; I think it’s more about what those things become to you. For instance, has money and popularity become your master? Or are you struggling with greed? Maybe for Francis Chan, those things hindered his walk with God. The Bible says “If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out”. If you are consumed by the temptations and distractions that money can bring, maybe you are better off without the pursuit of all that money and instead you can learn the virtue of contentment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps Francis Chan knows what it means to be free now. Free of all the things that most of us chase after. He’s free to be who he is in Christ, free to serve with no ulterior motives. True freedom comes when you are truly unencumbered by the world, when you can live as God intended for you to live. That’s freedom, and it’s what most people want, but to find that type of freedom, you need to forego everything this world has to offer and make Jesus your only desire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
