People will take a stand for many things .They take a stand against immorality, or take a stand for sound doctrine, but when do people take a stand for grace? Taking a stand for grace doesn’t mean you are a pushover who tolerates sin. Jerry Falwell took a stand against all the evils in the world, but he was also known to be very graceful, especially towards students at Liberty. He once said all the drunkards in the county knew him, and when he was away from church at a restaurant or wherever, these sinners whom Falwell might have railed against on TV, would come up to talk to Falwell, because they knew him to be a graceful man and they were safe with him. I once talked to Falwell. He saw me coming out of the cafeteria and he waved me down. Other students flocked to him for hugs, but when he talked to me I sensed he actually wanted to get to know me. He asked about my background, what church I went to, who my pastor was, among other things. To a lonely kid who was struggling, it left an impression on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think the pastor whose church I split took a stand for grace and compassion. Maybe he knew I wasn’t trying to be rebellious or cool, I just had a problem. And when some members of the church came down on the side of judgement, he decided to stick with grace, and that might not have meant anything to these members of the church, but that makes all the difference to me. I was mostly oblivious to this division in the church while it was going on since I was away at college during the time, but after he told me what happened in a round about way, not wanting to tell me it was about me, I eventually put the pieces together. I do realize I caused these problems and if I didn’t smoke this would have never had to happen in the first place, but when I look back I see grace at work and if this is the type of grace that Christ has for me, I’m overwhelmed and I can’t get enough of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
