Under this proposal, every voter would have to produce formal proof of citizenship. That sounds simple until you realize how many Americans\u2014especially those born abroad or in complicated circumstances\u2014don\u2019t have those documents readily available. I was born outside the country, and even I can\u2019t locate mine. Replacing it costs $760 and takes five to eight months. That\u2019s not election integrity; that\u2019s a barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it\u2019s a barrier that falls heaviest on minority citizens. Research consistently shows that mail\u2011in voting, early voting, and other accessible voting options increase participation among minority communities\u2014not undocumented immigrants, but actual U.S. citizens. And we all know which party those communities tend to support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So let\u2019s be honest about what\u2019s happening. This isn\u2019t about security. It\u2019s about d<\/strong>isenfranchising a massive portion of the electorate to lock in political advantage. It\u2019s a deliberate narrowing of the franchise in a country that\u2019s supposed to expand it. There\u2019s nothing patriotic about that. It doesn\u2019t \u201csave\u201d anything. It undermines the very idea of a representative democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And for the record, this isn\u2019t coming from a Democrat.
