Let me tell you about my kingdom

I want to tell you about a wonderful kingdom that I belong to. It’s a kingdom where love reigns supreme and our sorrows are traded in for joy. Millions upon millions of people have entered this kingdom, and none of them have ever reported regrets regarding the kingdom or our ruler. Our citizens are happy even though they experience hardships. It’s a kingdom where there is no death, you can live an eternal and abundant life here. There is no other kingdom like it anywhere. It’s a kingdom where the King dwells in the hearts of its citizens. But there are a few things you should know about this kingdom.

First, entry into this kingdom is not for anyone who thinks they are good on their own accord. It’s reserved for people who know they are sinners. That’s right, you must be a sinner to enter into the kingdom – someone who can admit they have fallen short of the King’s perfect standards. Jesus, our king said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17b). You must be able to confess that you are a sinner. If that’s you, you’re a perfect candidate for this kingdom.

The second thing you should know about this kingdom is that in order to enter you must repent of your sins. You must turn from your old ways – turning from your sin and turning towards our kingdom’s ruler – Jesus. You must be willing to forsake everything you know to enter this kingdom.

In addition to being a sinner and repenting of your sin, you should know that entry into the kingdom is granted on the basis of a free gift. The gift of salvation from your sins into eternal and abundant life is given freely. You cannot earn your way in through your own efforts, if you try to do so you will be turned back. When you come before this kingdom you must come with empty hands. You don’t deserve this gift of the kingdom where we are forgiven for our sins, you can only receive it through the King’s unmerited favor. It’s yours if you’ll just receive it.

Additionally, you should know that entry into this kingdom was bought for you through the death of Jesus our ruler. He paid the price by suffering the penalty that you and I deserve. After suffering this death, he was raised from the dead so that death could no longer hold Him, or us captive. I should also tell you that after entering the kingdom you must follow the King and obey him which is not burdensome since He loves us with a sacrificial love – to the point of death. He willingly laid down his life for us.

Another thing you should know about this kingdom is that you are always wanted here. The King even wants you here. You may feel unwanted at school or work. You may even feel unwanted by family or even your church but not in this kingdom. Our ruler cares deeply for its citizens and would-be citizens. If you are lost he will leave everyone to come look for you. He wants you in his kingdom more than anything. Again, he died for you to make this happen. No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done you are welcome here.

Finally, I want to tell you of this kingdom’s benefits. Not only will you live forever, but you’ll experience fellowship with others who are all able to experience  “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” in this life right now (Gal 5:22b). It’s a kingdom that values close unconditional friendships with people from all different types of backgrounds and ethnicities. We all gladly worship and serve our ruler who is the most benevolent and kind ruler to ever live. He even loves those that this world seems to love the least. I want to invite you into this kingdom. Will you receive our King into your heart and enter into this wonderful kingdom?
