Stop striving

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Romans 8:11

Some people say it is hard to try and live the Christian life. They are wrong. It is downright impossible to try and live the Christian life! Jesus said his yoke was easy and his burden was light (see Matt 11:30), so why does it seem to be so difficult? The answer is that we can’t do it on our own, we need the Holy Spirit in us, which we’ve already been given the moment we were born again. We aren’t left up to our own devices to live the Christian life. We must simply allow the Holy Spirit to live His life in and through us. You weren’t meant to live this life on your own.

During Jesus’ earthly ministry, the disciples had a hard time understanding the things of God. In fact, they were quite timid at times, and definitely not up to the task they were being called for. However, at Pentecost, things changed dramatically. The Holy Spirit came upon them and they received power to live the Christian life.

Acts 1:8 tells us just how they were to become equipped for the task that lie ahead of them. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”. It wasn’t by their own “power” that they would witness to the ends of the earth but by the power of the Holy Spirit living in them.

Are you trying to rely on your own power to live the Christian life that you were called to? The good news is that you don’t have to rely on your own power or strength, but simply let the power of the Holy Spirit work through you. So be filled with the Spirit; yield yourself to him and His life will be lived through you. You don’t have to strive so much.
