Is it ever okay to hate?

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

Romans 12:9

Is it ever okay to hate? You better believe it is! We are to “hate what is evil”. We are to hate sin and Satan. We are to hate the world’s values. By contrast, we are to love what is good. However, we can’t love everything, it “must be sincere”. We deceive ourselves when we think it’s right to love everything. We must hate evil and everything opposed to God. Christianity is not pollyannish thinking. If you find good in everything there is something wrong (but by the same token we shouldn’t find evil in everything). This world is marred by sin, and so are we. Almost everyone would say Adolph Hitler was an evil man because he committed so much evil up until the day he died, but if you want to be pollyannish you could say he loved his wife. That’s something good, isn’t it? You’ve certainly found the silver lining, but you did so by blinding yourself to the fact that he is responsible for the murder of 6 million Jews. I will stop there because I’ve done plenty of evil myself and probably not enough good!

It is true that we don’t become good by focusing on sin and evil. I’ve seen people (myself included) who become so focused on evil that they are overtaken by it. It’s all they can think about and they end up full of pessimism and possibly even becoming the very things they hate.

So we can’t be so fixated on the evil that it consumes us. We need to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. You can’t store up evil in your heart and expect good to come out, you must store up good in your heart so that it overflows with good – so that you can overcome evil. Or, to put it another way, we are to “cling to what is good” – to attach ourselves to what is good. That just means finding what is good and pursuing it with all your heart. But at the same time, you have to be on guard for evil because the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking to devour you.
