When God is with you

But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.

Gen 50:20

Joseph’s brothers caused him much pain. Joseph was a little brat so his brothers hated him and sought to kill him. In fact, everyone thought he was dead. Joseph was thrown into a pit, sold as a slave, and jailed like a criminal, but Joseph had one thing going for him. A number of times through his harrowing journey, the bible says “but the Lord was with Joseph” (Gen 39:2, 21,23). It doesn’t matter what opposition you face, if the Lord is with you, you will survive. That’s all Joseph had going for him – the Lord was with him. You may not have anyone “with you”, but if God is with you, thats all you need.

Because the “Lord was with Joseph”, he rose to the rank of Governor of Egypt. What a sight when his brothers come before him begging for food. Joseph was torn. His brothers left him for dead, and now here they are at his mercy. Joseph went through a range of emotions after seeing his brothers, how should he deal with them? It was no easy task for Joseph, so he wept bitterly at thier sight. At first, Joseph does a number of things that brought his brothers to thier knees before they realized it was him whom they were dealing with. Seeing his brothers brought back all the pain and hurt they had caused him. He could’ve dealt with his brothers treacherously, because they deserved it, but they were his brothers after all. After going through all of his emotions, he decides to forgive them. And so we all love Joseph for being so magnanimous towards his brothers. If only we could all be like Joseph when under pressure. It’s hard to forgive when you’ve been wronged and hurt, but because the Lord was with Joseph he was able to do it. We can forgive because Jesus forgave us, and by His Spirit we can also forgive others – even when it hurts badly.
